Before I got into photography, you may be surprised to know that I was an blogger food critic! I was often invited to restaurants to try their food. It was really an honour. It’s been awhile since I’ve provided my review on anything since we have been so busy with the business but I wanted to share my review on Nobu as we were so frustrated with our experience. We have heard so many good reviews and was so excited to try it. I left the below review on Zomato and although it was nice to get feedback from the General Manager, I still feel unsatisfied.
My family had before tried the Bento Boxes which they thought were terrific and good value despite it being $50-60/each. Unfortunately since we came for dinner, it was a sharing plate kind of style. We ordered seven dishes.
Himasa Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño
Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna
The favourite: Crispy Soft Shell Crab Spicy Ponzu Dip
Whole fish Tempura with 2 Sauces
Squid “Pasta” Light Garlic Sauce
Tuna Cut Roll, House Special Sushi and Lemon Cured Tasmanian Salmon Hako Sushi, Jalapeño Salsa
Here is my review:
We came to this restaurant after hearing favourable reviews from our family. They came with us wanting us to have to the same experience again. But as soon as you walk into the restaurant, you aren’t even welcomed by the lady at the door. Our waitress also had the same demeanour. She wasn’t very helpful and often left us waiting for 20 minutes at a time. This wouldn’t be all that bad if the ambience was nice and we could enjoy each other’s company.
But the place was very loud and the lights were very dim. We could hardly even read our menus without using our smartphone as a source of light. Even other patrons at other tables were using the candles on the table to read the menu. But our level of service just kept getting worse. It started off with waiting 20 minutes just to be able to talk with the waitress to request glasses of water for the table and then another 10-15 minutes to actually order.
We ordered 7 dishes and each came at 20-30 minutes intervals. We watched other tables come and go before us. Why did our food take that long? The plates were to be shared amongst 5 people so were devoured quickly and then left us hungry and wanting more for much too long in between. It wasn’t enjoyable.
I did enjoy the soft shell crab however which was perfectly balanced with the ponzu dip. Everything else was OK. I don’t mind paying extra for good food, especially sushi but I didn’t feel like we got anything extraordinary here. It wasn’t really satisfying and didn’t feel like we got good value. Plus, with the addition of bad service in that it took us way too long to get all the food we ordered, the five of us left frustrated.
