Who would have thought that the amazing Northern Lights would have brought these two together? Fariz and Salimah’s dad were working together on the construction of the Toronto Ismaili Centre and the Aga Khan Museum. It was then when Salimah took a trip out to Yellowknife to see the Northern Lights. Fariz thought this was really interesting and reached out to her to hear about her trip. After a few coffees, Fariz wanted to move onto a real dinner date with her but Salimah had already friend-zoned him.
It was only a year later that they bumped into each other again at the Ismaili Center and Fariz suggested getting together again for coffee. It was only on their sixth “outing” that Salimah started interrogating Fariz if they were in fact “dating”. 1.5 years later – they are still together!
One thing that everyone knows about them is that they love watching airplanes and they’ll always yell out “airplane” as soon as they hear or see one. Although Salimah knew Fariz was special, it was on date number seven in particular that it really sealed the deal for her. Fariz had planned a surprise date to go out to watch the airplanes by the airport and took her to the same spot where she used to go plane watching with her parents when she was little.
Fariz proposed to Salimah over Thanksgiving weekend in Victoria, British Columbia. Salimah had a work trip out to BC and Fariz was able to join her for the weekend. Fariz had initially wanted to propose publicly during dinner but he changed his mind, thinking it would be better to do it in a more intimate setting. In their hotel room, Fariz got down on one knee and said, “I was thinking I could go to dinner with my fiance instead…” Salimah figured it out and started to cry. So sweet!
Salimah and Fariz are seriously so lovely together. For their engagement session, we, of course, had to incorporate planes! We went out to the Toronto Harbourfront where we could see some Porter Airline airplanes as well as some personal jets flying over Lake Ontario and landing at Billy Bishop Airport. We later made our way to the Toronto Island airport for some photos up close with the planes. You could tell how much fun they were having – just to be so close with the airplanes.
What I noticed during our session together is how natural they are together and how they light each other up! You can just tell that they just love being around each other and give each other so much joy. Fariz was also quite the gentleman, always complementing his beautiful fiance and how grateful he is to have her in his life. So adorable!
