When you’re in Vancouver, British Columbia, make sure you venture out of the city and visit some of the mountains that are close by and easy to get to – even without a car!
When we were in Vancouver, we didn’t have a car but wanted to see the rest of beautiful British Columbia so we had to find easy to get to day trips. We actually combined our day trip to Grouse Mountain with a visit to the famous Capilano Suspension Bridge since it is on the same route. The Capilano Suspension Bridge is actually on the way to Grouse Mountain and we found out that we could hop on a free Capilano Suspension Bridge shuttle bus which picked us up from one of the hotels around Vancouver.
Once we got to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, we took the number 236 bus towards Grouse Mountain. The bus stop was just a 2 minute walk from the park and was just a 12 minute ride up!
Once we got there, we paid for a ticket to shuttle up on the Gondola. It wasn’t cheap, but the views were so pretty. Even though there was snow up on the mountain, the trees on the mountain were still green. We loved being able to see
We visited Grouse Mountain in December but the snow wasn’t fresh and quite icy. It made walking around the mountain a little trickier and we decided against on doing one of the trails because we didn’t have ice cleats (crampons).
There are a number of things to do up at Grouse Mountain but if you’ve decided not to spend the day skiing, ice skating or snow shoeing, you can always take a quick and free sleigh ride around the main area. It’s, of course, catered more for kids but we enjoyed the little detour!
We also enjoyed a cozy lunch in the Peak Chalet. There aren’t a huge variety of options but prices were not too bad.
My brother and I are too old for tobogganing but we were lucky to have someone around the park to give us their free toboggan coupon so we could replicate a childhood photo together! The toboggan areas aren’t that big but are enough for small kids.
Our favourite part of visiting Grouse Mountain is enjoying the views from the balconies of the Peak Chalet. The sun sets early in December so we got to see some of the early sunset colours in the sky. So beautiful!
On the way back, we caught the same bus to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and enjoyed the Canyon Lights which they had for the holidays. It was the perfect time to visit after dark when all the pretty lights are lit up! Stay tuned for our next post to see some photos from our visit there.
